We students often have to share large amounts of information, and sometimes require access to our work documents at the weirdest of times and places. If you’ve ever forgot to print your Chem report on your home PC when it’s due today, or need constant reminders on assignments due, project meetings, etc., or have to share common project documents with several team members, cloud computing presents a solution to your problems.
Cloud computing basically is the hosting of computing resources and information on a server, that users may access from a client computer. Currently cloud computing widely refers to the hosting of information, though efforts are being made to make applications web-based too (web apps, e.g. Google Documents).
If you’re interested in getting into cloud computing, here are some useful options for the mac:
Dropbox
Dropbox – Dropbox directory on my Mac, browser interface, and menubar app.
Dropbox is a fantastic service that hosts your information online so you can access them anywhere, anytime (if you have an internet connection). Dropbox also provides a background application for both Mac and Windows that automatically synchronizes a directory on your computer with the server, so you can keep your documents up to date across various computers. There’s also a Dropbox iPhone App that allows you to access PDFs and other documents from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
Best Free Software For Mac
Best of all, Dropbox allows you to share specific folders with your friends, so all the members of a project can work on various documents on their own, and have the changes synchronized with everyone else in the team, without emails bouncing all over the place. Dropbox also comes with a public folder, where you can put documents that you wish to share with the public. In this way, Dropbox can work as a simple yet highly effective file host for your website.
You can check out Dropbox here. Also, a similar service from Microsoft exists, called Windows Live Mesh/Sync, though it’s still in beta, and from my experience not as simple to use or as “clean” as Dropbox. It works for both Mac and Windows, and you can check it out here.
Google Apps
No discussion about cloud computing is complete without the mention of the free Google Apps Suite: Google Documents, Google Calendar and Google Contacts.
Google Documents
Google Documents offers a free and convenient way to collaborate on documents, as wells as providing an online repository for documents. Third-party solutions exist that allow users to sync files on the computers with Google Docs. I’ll probably be covering this in a future post.
Google Calendar
Google Calendar is a calendar service that provides ways to synchronize calendars across various devices. For example, I have Google Calendar hooked up on my Mac and iPod Touch, so I can bring my iPod to school instead of my Mac, and update my calendar with assignment due dates, project meetings, etc., and have notifications pop up on my Mac when the events are due. Hooking up Google Calendar to iCal is really easy, just check out Google’s support page for more info.
Google Contacts
Part of Gmail, Google Contacts offers a single repository for all your contacts. Users can set up Address Book in Mac OS X and Contacts in iOS to synchronize with Google Contacts, so all your contacts are up to date and available on all your devices. Say you meet a new lab partner. You can add his contact on your iPhone, including phone number, email address, etc., and have his contact synchronized to Address Book on your Mac. The next time you wish to email him, there will be no need to add/edit his contact, simply type his name into Mail and Mail will search Address Book for his contact and complete his email address for you.
TeamViewer
While not exactly cloud computing, remote access to your computers can offer significant productivity benefits. Case in point: imagine you’re not at your computer, say, out having lunch, and would like to check the progress of a simulation you have running on your computer back home or in the lab, maybe even making some edits. Remote access offers the option to do so.
Free Project Management Software Mac
Most remote access solutions are expensive and require tweaking with firewall and IP settings. Not TeamViewer, which offers a free remote access service that works through firewalls for personal use. There’s even a web interface, so you don’t have to install anything on the “client” computer when trying to access your home/lab computer.
Project Management Software For Mac
TeamViewer is also cross-platform, and works for Mac, Windows, and popular Linux flavours. For Windows, TeamViewer offers the option to have the server app startup with Windows, so you can access your PC even before logging into Windows. This functionality is not available for Mac or Linux.
Best of all, TeamViewer provides a free iPhone App that allows you to view your computer screen and offers a full keyboard complete with Command-⌘, Option-⌥, Control-⌃ and Shift-⇧ keys, plus arrow keys. The App even supports server computer with multiple screens!
